What are Meta tags and what do they do?. There are so many references to this term and yet it is not used correctly by almost 80% of all Web Sites.
What are "Meta Tags?"
Meta tags are simple instructions placed between the header tags on a web page "placed here"to facilitate preferences for Search Directories. As Search Directories cannot always index content, this forces them to use these pre-set tags instead.
Graphic intense pages with minimal text, would need these tags to improve there chances of being found.
What Role do they play in Exposure?
Most Search Directories use the "Meta Tags" to gather description and keywords for their INDEXING process. This is not used to the same degree by all Search Engines.
What Meta Tags are there?
The above Meta tags are the minimum that should be included with every page, there are however, more meta tags for different and varying purposes. We will contend only with what is needed to attain success.
What should Meta Tags contain?
Author - let the world know who took the trouble to get the tags and pages together. Classification - targets audience and assists in screening by certain software. Description - use a concise description of the content of the web page Keywords - the key word and key phrases you want your page found with.

Use two-word and three-word phrases, they work better than single words. Remember lower and upper case often makes a difference, incorporate both. DO NOT repeat key-words excessively, Search engines normally penalize your rating if the keyword is used more than 6 times. (this may vary).
Description:
Keep description concise and short. On average only 200 characters or 20 words. Include a few of the keywords in the description.
**Title:
The title is not a meta tag, however this does play a significant part by many directories as far as your rating is concerned.
